Product Description Professor West enlists the help of his students to bring the dead back to life.
Amazon.com Stuart Gordon's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West: Re-Animator puts a Night of the Living Dead spin on the classic Frankenstein story. Jeffrey Combs furrows his brow and bugs his eyes as the preternaturally intense Herbert West, a maverick medical student whose gory, gooey experiments cause bloody corpses and body parts to jerk to life. Bruce Abbot is the studious roommate drawn into his extracurricular experiments, which soon involve the dean's daughter (the frequently naked Barbara Crampton) and the college's cadaverous, calculating star professor (David Gale), who literally loses his head over a battle for West's discovery. In this world, that's only a minor setback. Charged with sick gallows humor and a ghoulish gallery of undead beasties, Re-Animator, like Evil Dead II, is one of the most inspired and inventive--and funniest--horror films of the 1980s. Combs, Abbot, and Gale reunite for the almost-as-entertaining sequel Bride of Re-Animator. --Sean Axmaker

THIS IS A 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION! August 23, 2010 Jay Stone (San Francisco, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this movie!
I just want to correct the Amazon product description. The version pictured is the 2-Disc Special Edition. Amazon incorrectly identifies this as a single disc version.
The second disc is a bonus disc with interviews, etc. UPC is: 013131502190
Perfect balance of humor and horror August 2, 2010 Sarasotan (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read Lovecraft's "Herbert West: Re-Animator", and this movie is based on it only in the loosest sense. That's not to say it's a bad movie - it's one of the most memorable horror movies I've seen, and one of my favorites. But if Lovecraft saw the movie he'd either go into hysterical laughter or feel an angry sense of slander. It all depends on his sense of humor. (Somehow I don't picture H.P. Lovecraft as having the greatest sense of humor in the world! LOL)
The short story contained no female characters and not even a mention of a female. So whoever wrote the Barbara Crampton storyline had quite an overly active imagination. Some of the scenes with her are the most memorable of the movie and probably the farthest things possible from Lovecraft's mind, and seem the result of some very sick, twisted, bizarre imagination.
In other words, it's a great movie, which you will remember and probably want to watch over and over! It strikes just the right balance between seriousness and campness. It never takes itself too seriously. Some of the dialogue of the Herbert West character is just obviously designed to be so unnatural as to make the audience laugh. Yet it takes itself seriously enough that the horror isn't negated by the humor.
The picture and sound quality on this are excellent. The picture is beautifully restored - very sharp and with strong colors, and it fills the whole screen. The sound options include DTS, which is always a plus. It doesn't have subtitles (at least not in the R rated version I rented from Netflix.)
Re-Animator July 11, 2010 Robert W. Merritt (Richmond, Virginia USA) The most fun to be had enjoying a horror movie, period. Jeffery Combs at his ultimate best. Everything about the movie is amazing. It is a great classic to be enjoyed again and again.
Great movie!!! May 22, 2010 M. Tarre This is a great realease of one of the greatest horror films of all time, I would like some more extras but I'm asking too much, if the added 6 hours I would feel that good stuff is been left out.
Re-Animator anchor bay release May 21, 2010 David J. Turner 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is actually a 2-disc set. There's another one out there that's 2-disc and costs more mainly because it includes a green highlighter. Big deal, right? But both versions are the two disc, and it's loaded with extras. Anchor Bay always delivers a great package, so you get a wide screen presentation, two audio commentaries, a 70 minute featurette, interviews, deleted/extended scenes, trailers, still galleries, etc.
Judging by the case of the Millennium Edition, this has a lot more to offer and it's gone down to a reasonable price, making it a great buy for fans of HP Lovecraft, Stuart Gordon, Jeffrey Combs, or flat out fans of gore flicks in general.
