Product Description Young dancers at the American Ballet Company compete and strive to succeed.
Amazon.com The primary appeal of dance movies is the dancing, with some added emphasis on the romance the art expresses. Center Stage wins on these counts, despite its reveling in overly familiar characters and formula plotting. Or maybe this reveling is responsible for what goofy fun this film is. The arduous task of becoming a professional ballet dancer is incarnated by many good-looking teens, all stock dance-film characters affectionately portrayed mostly by newcomers. But center stage holds Jody Sawyer (Amanda Schull), who may never be a great ballerina, but she's certainly one sexy jazz dancer. Then there's the arrogant genius (Ethan Stiefel), the dictatorial impresario (Peter Gallagher), the demanding instructor, the bulimic, the stage mother, etc. As we follow these characters, the message develops that one should let go and do what feels good. Jody may not be ballet material, but she scorches the stage when she's uninhibited. And that's really the fun of this movie, which is never seriously interested in ballet to begin with. One ludicrous scene depicts one of the dancers quitting because she realizes she never wanted to be a dancer to begin with but was pushed into it by her overbearing mother. She stands up to mom in the lobby of the auditorium where she's supposed to be performing, the music of her piece providing a syrupy backdrop to her little drama. When she's finished talking, she walks off to the audience's unwitting applause. The scene is so ham-handed you can't help but laugh at its audacity, if that's what it is. The rest of the film is not so overdone, but it's all fun. --Jim Gay

If you're a dancer, you'll love this movie.... July 12, 2010 Assata A. Knox (Summit, NJ USA) I was moved to purchase this DVD after having seen the film on cable t.v. The dancers are excellent, as is the storyline (particularly where we see a dancer struggling to keep her weight down in order to be ballet perfect...even to the point of forcing herself to throw up). Not everyone has a happy ending in this film, but then again, life isn't always tied up into one neat little package for everyone. Some of the dance movies I've seen before have been great, but all too often, the ending is the same: the hero(ine) of the story dances his or her way into the judges' hearts and gets the girl (or guy), to say nothing of that coveted role. "Center Stage" showed us that sometimes, life DOESN'T happen that way for us, no matter how good we are.
awesome June 24, 2010 Laurie W. Gangadean I loved this movie---I am a dancer, and I thought these kids were absolutely the best I have ever seen. I was enthralled.
The dancing elevates this predictable film... April 1, 2010 Andrew Ellington (I'm kind of everywhere) Really...I'm the first review?
Dance movies were kind of all over the place the place this decade. Some were bad, some were good, some were awful, some were great and then some were cheesy fun with no real redeeming value. `Center Stage' is probably in that category. It is fun, albeit pointless, but when all is said and done you won't be kicking yourself for having watched it.
`Center Stage' pretty much regurgitates the same formula we see in many films within this genre. This time we are spending time in at a ballet school (The American Ballet Company) where students attempt to achieve greatness. The main student we are focusing our attention on is Jody Sawyer. She is the typical girl next door who wants to be a ballet dancer but possesses a funky edge that is better suited for jazz. Still, she has drive and potential.
Clichés abound.
The films dance sequences (especially towards the finale) are what save this film from being a total failure. Some of the acting is spirited (and this did help spawn the career of Zoe Saldana, so I'm grateful for that) but overall this is not an `actors' film. This is a dancers film, and those dancers (most of the cast had training or were dancers before actors) shine brightly in the numbers they are given to perform. The final dance numbers are provocative and engaging.
The film, outside of the dancing, is a cliché ridden mess, but at least it has some spunk. You are engaged, even if you have seen it all before and know exactly what is going to happen (why do most teenage dramas follow such a `paint-by-numbers' formula?). You have the overbearing stage mom, the girl who doesn't really want to be there, the one who doesn't quite stack up, the questionable love interest, the arrogant showoff, the demanding instructor...the list goes on and on.
Still, it is fun while it lasts.
Sensational Dance Movie March 12, 2010 Katherine (Miami, Florida) The dancing is better than that in 'The Turning Point' with Baryshnikov. Ethan Stiefel is an incredible dancer who does back to back bravura leaps all through the movie. Amanda Schull is lovely and not only dances very well but is quite good in her first acting effort. The second lead, Sasha Radetsky, is tall for a dancer, handsome and an excellent dancer. There is classical ballet galore but also some broadway dancing and classical ballet with with a modern twist. The story is delightful and the dialogue very good. This is a pleasure to watch over and over.
A Dance Movie March 3, 2010 Elizabeth A. Rigor (Seoul, South Korea) I loved this movie. As a dancer, it was great to watch some stars I had seen perform on the stage. The story line was a little on the weak side, but I wasn't really watching for the story. It is a great movie for teenage girls.
